Then: Merle was the last person to be added to the band and played tenor sax in the brass section. Merle had played in several bands before entering the Navy for a six year stint in 1967. When he got out of the Navy in 1973, Gordon asked him to join the band. He was in the band about six months before Midnight Sun disbanded. Merle did not play in any other bands after leaving Midnight Sun.

Now: Merle is married to Lisa and they live in Jetersville, Virginia. Merle has a grown son by a previous marriage and has recently become a grandfather to Gavin (1). Merle and Lisa have been married 15 years and have a son, Pake (11).
